Two lawmakers. A call and an email to each. We’ll walk you through all four actions.
A way to be heard.
A decision made by a judge.
“Termination of parental rights” means legally ending the parent-child relationship. It is a separate process from custody or parenting time.
The offense involved another child.
A parent has a conviction for a serious offense involving children. Their own child may not have been the victim. The existing conviction-based route may not fit that child’s circumstances.
The other parent can ask the court.
Addie’s Law proposes an independent path for the child’s other legal parent to petition after a qualifying conviction. A CHINS case or planned stepparent adoption would not be a prerequisite.
The judge considers this child.
A hearing, evidence, and due process would remain essential. The proposal retains required findings about a threat to the child’s well-being, best interests, and a satisfactory care plan.
The revised working draft requires clear and convincing evidence for the required findings. An allegation, arrest, or dismissed charge would not independently count as a qualifying conviction.
What is a CHINS case?
CHINS means “Child in Need of Services.” The proposal is intended to create a parent-initiated path without requiring a CHINS adjudication or removing a child from a protective parent first.
What kinds of convictions would qualify?
The working draft includes categories such as child molesting, child exploitation, possession of child sexual abuse material, child solicitation, and other specified child sexual offenses. The precise offenses and scope must be set in the final legislative text.
Is Addie’s Law already enacted?
This guide explains an advocacy proposal based on the revised working draft dated October 19, 2026. An introduced bill number has not been verified for this guide. You can ask lawmakers to support and help advance Addie’s Law by name now. Check the campaign and the General Assembly for later bill text and status.

To my state senator
Your town alone does not verify your district. Use the address finder in Step 1 first.
You can speak up without sharing a personal experience. Leave out children’s names and private case details.
Updating replaces your edits to the current draft. Other drafts stay available when you switch lawmakers, contact methods, or tones.
Find your lawmakers in Step 1 to fill in the email recipient automatically.
Your editable draft
Firm & directFilled from your selected district, or editable if their official profile gives another address. Review the recipient before sending. You can also copy the message into their official contact form.
Review the wording and recipient before sending. Opening an email draft does not send it.
Four actions. One clear request.
Call and email both of your state lawmakers. Check each action only after you have completed it. Opening a draft or phone link does not complete an action.

If you don’t hear back
Consider a brief follow-up in about a week. If the office gives you a timeline, use that instead. Ask for a clear response about their support.
If they respond
- They support it.Thank them and ask what they can do next to help advance the proposal.
- They need more information.Share addieslaw.org and ask what questions they need answered.
- They are undecided or opposed.Ask what concerns they have and whether they would review the proposal’s safeguards.
